The Digital Messaging for Settlement and Integration (DMSI) project
At Refugee 613, we know newcomers have trouble getting the information they need in ways that work for them. That’s why we started the Digital Messaging for Settlement and Integration (DMSI) project. We believe digital messaging is a great tool for making sure everyone has access to the information they need.
We first started using digital messaging tools to help Arabic-speaking newcomers in our local area. This led us to create the DMSI project, which tested four other digital messaging models in four different communities across Canada. These pilot projects showed that digital messaging helps newcomers connect and form online communities where they share information and support each other.
DMSI is led by Refugee 613 and funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Refugee 613
Our vision at Refugee 613 is that everyone thrives in a welcoming world. To make this possible, we work at the intersection of communications and newcomer settlement and integration, with a special emphasis on refugee welcome. We’re a unique model that combines deep community connection with communications expertise to close gaps in the settlement and integration experience.
Based in Ottawa, we are active in convening, research, testing, content production, knowledge mobilization, public education, digital innovation and policy development, as well as strategic communications consulting, all rooted in our close partnerships in settlement, health, housing, government and other sectors locally, provincially and nationally.
